Evening event: 'Time-Lines and Space-Shapes: some things we might or might not learn about the history of international law if we could dive down the shaft of a future rubbish-mine with an enslaved mutant cormorant scavenging for the colour blue'

"If all goes to plan, I hope to (ab)use this very generous invitation to contribute to the Histories of Law and Global Order seminar as an opportunity to test out some elements of a short film that I am currently in the middle of producing.

Oriented around the Walter Benjamin Monument in Portbou, where I live and where Benjamin died, the film responds to a wider set of questions about the tendency of international law (its doctrine, institutions, practitioners, observers etc) to assume that everything the discipline needs to know, understand and convey about the world it engages with and, in doing so, transforms can be known, understood and convened using words, and words alone.

The article I have circulated in advance engages with a similar set of questions in a different context using, instead of stop-motion animation, a combination of words and cut-outs. For anyone who is interested, it should help to clarify what the film (which has no text, being an experiment in getting away from text) is trying to achieve."
